Church Multiplication
Missions Mobilization

by Dave Manske, Director for Church Multiplication and Missions Mobilization

What motivates you to tell others about Jesus Christ? What motivates you to live for Christ in a compelling way to the people near you?

Since middle school, I’ve read a Proverb each day. On the 24th of each month, I always wrestled with the words of Qoheleth:

Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, “but we knew nothing about this,” does not He who weighs the heart perceive it?Will He not repay each person according to what he has done? Proverbs 24:11-12

As a believer what is my responsibility? What is our corporate (church) responsibility to this text in regards to evangelism and witness, social justice and moral responsibility?

This month, I’ve enlisted the help of some of our ministry colleagues. They were given the question: What motivates you to be a witness, to be a missionary, to live Christ in a compelling way to the people near you? Here are two responses:

Jerry Kragt, District IW, Regional Director for our IW’s in Europe and the Middle East:

Today people have access to information like in no other time in world history. At the click of a button, a person can experience a video call with someone on the other side of the globe. One can do a quick search on the internet for any place or people group and within seconds can be looking at a video or map, reading multiple articles or finding ways to get personally connected.

So why is it important for followers of Christ to go to another place in the world, struggle to learn language and culture, and try to make disciples in a difficult place? Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to send a link to a good Christian website? Couldn’t we simply beam in a Christian radio or television station? Or maybe do a flyover and drop millions of Gospel brochures?

The answer is yes, we could and should do many such things. But these are not a substitute for actual flesh and blood people going and sharing the Gospel in word and deed in places where people still lack access. Jesus said that by their fruit you will recognize them and that  they will know you are my disciples by your love for each other. Such a witness requires modeling what it looks like to follow Jesus. The message of the Gospel must be lived out!

Christ followers are the salt and light of the world and that salt and light is most effective when it can be seen, touched, experienced. We are the body of Christ, His ambassadors in the world, called to go into all the world and make disciples.

That is what motivates me to do what I do – I want to be a living witness for those who have never had a chance to see and touch the body of Christ.

Ken Scott, District church planter in Talmoon, Minnesota, third generation evangelist and church planter:

I once was lost and now I'm called. He saved me! It is His Heart that none should perish but that all should come to repentance. That's my reason for living Jesus Christ. That's my reason to witness. Everywhere you look throughout scripture you have the same resounding theme and it is salvation. Salvation from sin, from shame, from floods, from fire, from giants, lions, kings, queens, enemies both foreign and domestic, principalities, powers, demons, death and hell.

All throughout scripture He also calls for a willing vessel to carry His heart. To carry His message of reconciliation coupled with His warnings. To let His voice pour from their mouth so that through the foolishness of preaching some might be saved. I carry His heart. He removed my heart of stone and placed within me this heart of love and compassion that breaks for the lost who don't know Him, for the ones who used to be me.

Everywhere rebellion exists God's voice pours out from Heaven, Return to me! My salvation is forever! I obeyed that voice and now I get to be that voice. I am called and blessed to be Holy so the voice they hear is not tainted by the image of the world. I am called and blessed to let my life and my message be one and the same. I'm called and blessed to live like Jesus. He came so the lost might be found so I am called and blessed to do the same. I am BLESSED with the Heart of God and if you know Him so are you.

I’m interested in your response to this question:
