About Compassion Church
In the summer and fall of 2018, local news stations were covering a story of a growing homeless encampment in Minneapolis. As we watched the ‘tent city’ grow to hundreds of people, we heard a clear call from God to start a church to reach the homeless population. After several years of listening and discerning, we believe God was not only calling us to start a church in Anoka to reach the homeless population but gave us a vision to start a coffeehouse where we could also employ people affected by homelessness and become a church home.
In 2021, Compassion Church started meeting as a small group of believers for monthly worship gatherings at Heart of the City Music Factory in Anoka, Minnesota (a central location to many surrounding organizations that seek to end homelessness) and to practice weekly rhythms of discipleship as a Compassion group in our homes.
In 2022, Compassion Coffee was formed, and we started operating a travel coffee cart as our first steps to open a coffeehouse.
In 2024, We found a location for the coffeehouse at 530 West Main Street #8 in Anoka, renovated the space, and opened in October. The coffeehouse also became the new home for Compassion Church.
Today, Compassion Church hosts worship gatherings on Sunday mornings at 10am at the coffeehouse. We continue to offer the coffee cart to be hired for events, and the coffeehouse is open Tuesday through Saturday to the community.
Our Vision
Our vision for Compassion Church is to make Jesus visible in our communities by showing compassion to those in need. While we currently have one location in Anoka, we dream about more church and coffeehouse locations to advance God’s Kingdom throughout the Twin Cities.
As we prepare for multiplication, we’re also aligning the structure of staff. Rob Bergfalk currently serves as the Lead Pastor and shepherds the Anoka congregation. By the summer of 2026, we plan to identify and commission a Community Pastor in Anoka. The Community Pastor will serve as the primary preacher, shepherd the flock, and engage in the community. The addition of the Community Pastor allows the Lead Pastor role to become a “pastor of pastors”, focusing on the vision, leadership development, and the long-term goal of planting more churches.
We are excited about this structure, as the Community Pastor will be devoted to seeing the church and coffeehouse location in their community thrive, while also allowing the growing network of Compassion Church locations to be connected by a shared vision and mission. The Community Pastor will partner closely with Rob by participating in shared sermon series, leadership development rhythms, and church multiplication planning.
